What are Waypoints, Routes and Tracks?

A Waypoint is a place or position with a defined coordinate and a name. For example, Your House, the Church, the road Junction, the Marina. A waypoint may have other attributes such as a Symbol (Icon), Height and Comment. Sometimes waypoints are refered to as Points of Interest (POIs). A Route is an ordered list of waypoint names.

For example: Marina ===> Church ===> Junction ===> House.

You might construct a route so that you can load it to your hand-held device with installed TerraTrack Recorder 7 in order to guide you when visiting each waypoint in order. A route may consist of say 3 to 50 waypoints - perhaps of the places you may wish to go to. A Track is normally the recording of a previously traversed path. It consists of an ordered list of Trackpoints and shows where you have been. Each trackpoint has a position, altitude and a date/timestamp. Individual trackpoints do not have a name, but a whole Track may have a name. The TerraTrack Recorder 7 records trackpoints periodically - every second. In some cases the tracks may be broken into track segments (there are breaks in the track, for example, when the satellites signal is to faint). A track may contain several hundred or even thousands of trackpoints. Tracks may show the detailed path between 2 waypoints, at the same time as a Route only shows the straight line path between 2 waypoints.

Warning:

When a route is shown graphically by lines connecting the waypoints, the lines DO NOT INDICATE that the ground path actually follows a straight line. The connecting line only implies that two waypoints are sequential. At the same time as a straight line indicates the general direction 'a bird would fly' between waypoints it may NOT BE SAFE TO FOLLOW THE LINE ON THE GROUND.

How do I send a rescue SMS in case of emergency?

To do that first we need the valid position of our location. The second our Windows phone has to have the SMS service and it must be available. It is possible to choose up to three defined SMS number to send it in case of an emergency.

  1. Main Menu->Record from... to establish the communication for the position data;
  2. Driving Views->Rescue->Menu->Send Rescue SMS;

To enter the destination SMS numbers, please use Main Menu->Settings...->Record->Rescue SMS numbers: and enter the numbers in the text boxes.

How do I record a journey track?

First, we need a position NMEA - 0183 receiver (GPS, GLONASS a so on). There are built-in or Bluetooth receivers. Second, we have to start the reading of the position data from receiver at the TerraTrack Recorder 7 to get our present position. Third, the raw data stream from the receiver will be saved to file with location \My Documents\ and for example with the name 2008_08_26_12_47_47_Tue.txt. The file \My Documents\2008_08_26_12_47_47_Tue.txt can be saved or deleted at the end of recording. The built-in GPS receivers normally will be detected automatically.

  1. Main Menu->Record from built-in GPS. If you do not have any built-in GPS, you may select a Bluetooth receiver to establish the communication for the position data: Receiver->TerraTrack Recorder 7, how it is described in the step 2. After stop of the journey recording you may open the file and playback it to your PC navigation software or analyse the comprehensive statistics. After each start of the track recording a new file will be created;
  2. Main Menu->Record->Bluetooth... or Serial... If you use a Bluetooth receiver be sure that Bluetooth service on your hand-held device is on. After stop of the journey recording you may open the file and playback it to your PC navigation software or analyse the comprehensive statistics. After each start of the track recording a new file will be created;
  3. Driving View->Recording->Track or Altitude;
  4. To show the current journey statistics select Driving View->Aero Pane->Track Statistics;
  5. To show particular items big, use Driving View->Aero Pane->User Selectable Fields;

How do I playback my journey track?

First, we need a PC with a Bluetooth interface (built-in or dongle) and second, a real time position tracking software. This all sounds difficultly, but as a matter of fact is very simple. The examples of the software are Microsoft Streets and Trips 2010, Microsoft AutoRoute 2010, Google Earth and many others.

  1. Main Menu->Open... To open select a recorded file with position data in NMEA-0183 format. They are normal txt files;
  2. Driving View->Recorded->Track or Altitude;
  3. You may select the destination device for the position data from TerraTrack Recorder 7 - Main Menu->Playback->Bluetooth... or Sereal...;
  4. Main Menu->Playback... establishing of communication: TerraTrack Recorder 7->PC (desktop, notebook and s. o.);
  5. To show the recorded journey statistics select Driving View->Aero Pane->Track Statistics;
  6. To show particular items big, use Driving View->Aero Pane->User Selectable Fields;

The playback runs as usual, you can control the all possible kinds of it: pause, speed, direction, and so on. Switch to particular points for example begin, end, max speed, max/min altitude... During of the tracks playback you may set the waypoints at places of your interests or arrange a route for the further navigation.

Perhaps you may establish such date transfer chains:

The last chain allows you even to use the built-in receiver with navigation software running on your PC. Therewith you could save money on not buying of stand-alone GPS receiver for your PC navigation software.

How do I navigate the routes or particular waypoints?

Important:

TerraTrack Recorder 7 CAN NOT CALCULATE A ROUTE BASED ON A MAP AUTOMATICALLY. To navigate you may have a complete route before.

First, we need to select a destination to navigate, with another word a point or a route with known coordinates. Second, we have to know our present position. The position data from receiver should be transferred to TerraTrack Recorder 7 and it should have the valid position. Third, we have to set us in the motion. Doing so, the navigation view of TerraTrack Recorder 7 will show us the direction, that we have to go and the turning direction to the next waypoint. If we use a route, after arrival on current waypoint, we will automatically navigate further to the next waypoint of the route. TerraTrack Recorder 7 has the full functionality for creating, managing, manipulating and exchanging waypoint and route information (in NMEA-0183 format).

  1. Main Menu->Destinations-> either Routes or Waypoints or Nearest Waypoints->... List ... Select in an appropriate dialog a route Go Along or waypoint Go To. It begins to blink green, that means the route or waypoint has been set as current destination;
  2. Main Menu->Record from... establishing of communication GPS Receiver->TerraTrack Recorder 7;
  3. What you want after that is easy, to GO. Route guidance in 3D-view will display you the desired direction to destination waypoint;

How do I use the Google Earth for the generation of a route?

You set the begin point and the end point of the route and get the desired route. We need to save the new route in a file. The generated route files by Google Earth have .KMZ or .KML name extensions. Then we have to copy the route file to our Windows phone and to open the file in TerraTrack Recorder 7. After that we get the desired route saved in TerraTrack Recorder 7. We select the route as current route and go along.

  1. Main Menu->Destination->Routes->Routes List... Go Along;
  2. Mein Menu->Record from... to get our current position;
  3. For the automatic guidance along the route check the options 'Automatically follow the route' at Main Menu->Settings...->Route Guidance;

How do I show my journey in the Google Earth?

Each journey you have recorded, you could show yourself in the Google Earth. First open the track in TerraTrack Recorder 7 and save it in the file either .KMZ or .KML format of Google Earth. Then copy the file to yours desktop PC. Open the file with click in File Explorer. Try the saving with the different settings at Main Menu->Settings...->Common, particularly with regard to the Altitude mode. How you will see the particular legs of track are showed with various colours, they mean the speed. The blue is slow, the green is faster, and the red is faster more.

How do I sort the waypoints by distance from me?

To get a destination lies nearest and on the going way, use the Nearest Waypoints functionality. There are two ways the waypoints could be sorted by distance from us.

The first, the entire destinations data bank is sorted by distance from current location of us and you could decide how many points will be showed, for example 10, 20, till all. Main Menu->Destinations->Waypoints->Nearest Waypoints->10, 20, till all.

As result you will see the list of nearest waypoints around you. Select Go To in context menu to set the destination point.

Important:

If your do not move and your speed equal null, you can not know which points lie ahead and which behind of you. But if you move and appropriate the speed is not null, you could easy see the waypoints that are ahead und behind of you.

What can I do if the destination data bank became big and slow?

The fastest and easiest way is, to delete all not necessary waypoints and routes after using of them.

The entire amount of waypoints and routs is keeping in a file \My Documents\NaviStor7.ttr. The copy of previous state of the file NaviStor7.ttr is NaviStor7.tt~. If you want to restore the previous state of data bank after miss-saving just delete the NaviStor7.ttr after then rename the NaviStor7.tt~ to NaviStor7.ttr. Done! Similar you could desired rename the file NaviStor7.ttr und move it into desired folder for keeping for further using. By start TerraTrack Recorder 7 will create the empty file whit name NaviStor7.ttr if it not exist in the folder \My Documents. So rename and replace the file \My Documents\NaviStor7.ttr you may use different data bases for the appropriate travels.

For empty the destination data bank:

  1. Close TerraTrack Recorder 7 Main Menu->Exit;
  2. Delete the file \My Documents\NaviStor7.ttr;
  3. Start TerraTrack Recorder 7;

For empty destination data bank by saving all data:

  1. Close TerraTrack Recorder 7 Main Menu->Exit;
  2. Rename the file \My Documents\NaviStor7.ttr at your pleasure. The file contains the destination data, you could use it again as the destination data bank in TerraTrack Recorder 7 when you rename the file into \My Documents\NaviStor.7ttr back;
  3. Start TerraTrack Recorder 7;
